Trafford edged through to the Semi Finals of the Manchester Premier Cup on Thursday night when they defeated a spirited Glossop side 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out at the Away Day Care Shawe View Stadium.
With one eye on Saturday’s crucial NPL fixture at Runcorn Linnets, home manager Karl Marginson made ten changes to the side that had drawn 1-1 with Stalybridge Celtic with only Jerome Wright, suspended for the Runcorn game, retaining his place.
And for long spells in the first half, Trafford were second best to their hard-working and industrious opponents who twice went close in the opening stages through Abdul Djalo and Jacques Etia.
In the 18th minute Etia put the visitors ahead when he dispossessed Ally Brown and fired in a shot that was deflected past debutant keeper Bruno Da Silva.
Emmanuel Ujachuku saw his effort blocked by Da Silva as Glossop sought a second and Trafford’s young centre back Mackena Bradshaw produced a fine last ditch tackle to thwart dangerman Etia.
Glossop keeper Ellis Allen parried an Eoin Hogan drive as Trafford mounted their first attack of any note and in the 38th minute a great low cross by Jerome Wright ended with Allen blocking Ollie Irwin’s effort at the back post.
In the 40th minute Ujachuku should have made it two when he had an open goal from just ten yards but fired against Da Silva on the far side of the goal.
Trafford showed far greater urgency and aggression in the second half with Jordan Fagbola replacing the injured Tom Eckersley although there was an element of good fortune about their equaliser when, in the 64th minute, Ally Brown drove the ball hard and low into the Glossop penalty area and Finley Stanyer sliced his clearance up and over keeper Allen.
Both teams pushed forward in search of the winner with Irwin and Hilal Khan going close for the hosts, and Etia and Ujachuku both squandering good chances for Glossop.
However, with the score locked on 1-1 after ninety minutes, the game went straight to the dreaded penalty shoot-out.
After five penalties each, the score stood at 4-4 and so sudden death beckoned. Bruno Da Silva produced a magnificent save to thwart Bevan Burey and it was left to young Jack Donohue to coolly slot home his spot kick and send his side through to the Semi Finals where they will meet Ashton United.
