Late goals condemn Trafford to Semi Final defeat

Two goals in the last four minutes earned NPL Premier Division outfit Ashton United a place in the Final of the Manchester Premier Cup and ended Trafford’s last chance of silverware this season.
Both teams played some excellent football throughout the game on a pitch made heavy by rain throughout the day with Sean Newton rifling a free kick from 25 yards inches wide in the 10th minute.
Sam Booth then saved from Kielen Adams before the Robins were rocked in the 23rd minute, Harry Norris heading Trafford into the lead following Tom Beckett’s right wing corner.
Trafford’s lead lasted just ten minutes as Adams found space on the left and played the ball across to the back post where Brad Abbott arrived to crash the ball past Booth.
In the 42nd minute Trafford squandered a great chance to retake the lead when Ally Brown drove a great ball across the face of the Ashton goal but somehow Chris Rowney blazed his shot over from just eight yards.
Tom Beckett then fired into the side-netting following another slick move but Trafford were dealt a sucker-punch a minute into injury time when Ashton attacked down their right, the ball was pulled back to Bernardo Couto and he blasted a fine low drive past Booth from 18 yards.
Jason Gilchrist headed onto the roof of the net as the hosts dominated the opening stages of the second half and Trafford manager Karl Marginson introduced substitutes Rob Worrall and Kanye Nisbett in place of Ally Brown and Tom Beckett.
Within three minutes of his introduction, Rob Worrall conjured a superb defence splitting pass that allowed Matty Morgan to shoot coolly past Paul Cooper and make it 2-2.
Home skipper Nathan Lowed fired into the side-netting as Ashton pushed forward once more, Gilchrist poking a shot side of the near post and James Hardy side-footing over from just ten yards.
The game appeared to be heading for a penalty shoot-out when, in the 86th minute, Alex Byrne released Jason Gilchrist down the middle and he neatly clipped the ball past the advancing Booth.
Then, with the last kick of the game, Gilchrist notched again with a tap in at the back post to make it 4-2 and give the hosts a rather flattering score-line.
Trafford must now turn their attentions to Saturday’s crucial relegation six pointer when they travel to play basement side 1874 Northwich, kick off 3 p.m.
