Trafford produced their best performance for weeks on Monday night but were denied all three points by a heart-breaking 95th minute equaliser by the hosts.
Karl Marginson’s team adapted superbly to the all-weather pitch at the home of Widnes Vikings Rugby League Club and almost snatched the lead in the 3rd minute when Isaac Noble skipped past two defenders and fed Matty Lusakueno who drilled his shot just wide.
A low drive from 25 yards by Brad Byrne was held at full stretch by keeper Nicolas Michalski as Trafford continued to dominate with Damola Sotona and Sean Higgins also going close with long range efforts.
However, in the 28th minute, City took the lead completely against the run of play with their first attempt on goal, Elliot Morris striking a brilliant free kick from 25 yards that flew past Sam Booth and in off the underside of the crossbar.
Skipper Harry Norris twice went close to equalising, first with a header that was cleared off the line and then with a low shot that brushed past the left hand upright.
In the 41st minute Trafford were finally rewarded for their superiority when Rio Clegg tenaciously won possession off a home defender and pulled the ball back to Isaac Noble who netted with consummate ease from 15 yards.
Three minutes into the second half Trafford struck again with Matty Lusakueno tormenting the home defence on the left and feeding Rio Clegg who fired into the top corner from close range.
Trafford defended magnificently for much of the second half although City midfielder Simon Wills squandered a great chance in the 64th minute when he shot wide from eight yards.
Sam Booth tipped an Adam Rooney header over the bar as City poured forward in the closing stages but Trafford appeared to be weathering the storm led by a towering performance by Norris.
However, in the fifth minute of injury time City substitute Arthur Lomax Jones crossed from the left, Trafford failed to clear and home captain Danny Mitchley arrived to ram the ball home from 12 yards.
The final whistle seconds later signalled a heart-breaking share of the points for a Trafford side that had dominated for much of the game and were deserving of more.
However, Trafford must put that disappointment behind them and focus on Saturday’s trip to local rivals Wythenshawe Town for an NPL West Division fixture kicking off at 3 p.m.
