Youthful Trafford side dumped out of the Manchester Premier Cup

A youthful Trafford side were dumped out of the Manchester Premier Cup by North West Counties outfit Chadderton at a freezing Away Day Care Shawe View Stadium on Tuesday night.
Manager Karl Marginson made eight changes to the team that had been narrowly beaten by Hednesford at the weekend with only Damola Sotona, Jack Higginbottom and Sam Gill retaining their places.
And the hosts made the worst possible start when, after just four minutes, Chadderton’s Lewis Byrne collected a long ball out of defence, rounded keeper Ollie Culkin and fired home.
Chadderton were well on top and Byrne almost doubled their lead in the 26th minute when a quickly taken free kick found him in acres of space but this time Culkin left his line to make a crucial and brave block.
Three minutes later that man Byrne was in the action once more when he skipped past two Trafford defenders and cracked a shot that Culkin brilliantly pushed to safety.
Visiting striker Jack Massey broke clear on the half hour but thankfully shot wide of the far post and Chadderton were made to pay for their profligacy four minutes later when Trafford right winger Josh Wood seized upon a weak back pass and crossed for Jack Donohue to equalise from six yards.
Trafford were now in the ascendancy for the first time and should have taken the lead when Ryley Smith released Damola Sotona with a superb defence splitting pass but visiting keeper Morgan Bacon came out to block with his feet.
The second half was rather scrappy and lacking in goalmouth incidents although the hosts squandered a good chance in the 54th minute when substitute Kanye Nisbett crossed from the right and Cian Donohue headed over from just six yards.
Damola Sotona struck a 25 yard drive inches over the crossbar but Trafford were punished for poor defending in the 74th minute when an in-swinging corner from the right was glanced home at the near post by Wisdom Bernard.
The closing stages saw Chadderton keeping possession with excellent and mature game management and they could in fact have increased their lead in the 87th minute when Matty Crothers wasted a good opportunity when he screwed his shot wide from 15 yards.
Manager Marginson will have viewed this game as a great opportunity to give his younger players some vital experience but he will now turn his attentions to Saturday when Trafford travel to play Kidsgrove Athletic in a NPL West Division fixture.
