Trafford fell to a heart-breaking last gasp defeat at Mossley on Bank Holiday Monday, an 88th minute header by home centre back Luke Barlow clinching the points for the hosts.
The visitors were once again missing several key players due to injury with Astley Mulholland, Rob Worrall, Glenn Matthews and Max Hazeldine all failing to make the starting line-up, and both teams looked tired following exacting games just two days earlier.
Defences were well on top throughout and there was a distinct lack of goalmouth action as both teams were restricted to long range efforts.
Mossley centre back Josh Dicken struck a 35 yard drive that was held at full length by Brad Rose and Trafford’s Matty Barlow fired wide from 20 yards four minutes later.
A deep free kick was headed over by Keaton Mulvey as the hosts shaded possession and a great move by Trafford in the 32nd minute ended with Barlow volleying over although he was adjudged to be marginally offside.
A scrappy and disjointed first half came to an end with Mulvey firing in a low drive that was easily held by Brad Rose.
The second half was marginally more entertaining although there was still a dearth of goalmouth action with both goalkeepers rarely troubled.
Oumar Camara volleyed wide from 15 yards for the hosts and a free kick just outside the penalty area was curled over by Trafford’s Alfie Belcher.
Mossley substitute Eden Bailey headed over in the 74th minute and Trafford should have taken the lead two minutes later when Matty Barlow won possession, stormed into the penalty area but instead of passing to the unmarked Tom Bentham chose to shoot and his effort was blocked.
Trafford’s appeals for a penalty were turned down when Jack Sloan appeared to be tripped and a shot by Bentham from 25 yards was easily gathered by Chris Thompson.
In the 86th minute Trafford were awarded a free kick in a central position 20 yards from goal but when Jack Dorney tapped the ball to the side, Tom Bentham’s drive was blocked by an onrushing defender.
The game appeared to be heading for a stalemate when Mossley struck with just two minutes remaining, Trafford half-clearing a corner from the left but then seeing Kane Hickman whip a vicious cross in that Luke Barlow glanced past Rose and into the opposite top corner.
Caldecott’s team were unable to fight back from this devastating blow and so fell to a defeat that leaves them hovering just above the relegation zone.
