Woeful first half defensive display costs Trafford dearly

Despite mounting a spirited second half comeback, Trafford’s woeful defensive display in the first period cost them dearly as they fell to a 4-2 defeat with Avro striker Kyle Hawley netting all four goals.
The visitors shaded the opening stages with Hawley heading straight at Sam Booth before putting his team ahead in the 20th minute when he broke clear with Trafford vainly appealing for offside and drove hard and low past Booth.
In the 27th minute Trafford left winger Matty Lusakueno was forced to leave the field with a recurrence of his hamstring injury but within two minutes of his introduction, substitute Niall Cummins equalised with a diving header following a delightful flighted cross by Matty Morgan.
Trafford were being over-run in midfield and in the 33rd minute Avro regained their lead when more slack defending allowed Hawley to fire home from 15 yards.
Ethan Kershaw then blasted over as home skipper Harry Norris lost the ball out on the right but three minutes before the interval Hawley completed his hat-trick with a simple tap in after Liam Ellis crossed from the right.
Just seconds into the second half Tom Beckett should have reduced the arrears but shot into the side-netting and in the 50th minute Niall Cummins grabbed a life-line for the hosts when he headed home a free kick by substitute Rob Worrall.
Eight minutes later Cummins almost snatched a dramatic equaliser when he swivelled neatly ten yards from goal but screwed his shot inches wide of the upright.
Trafford were now on top with Tom Beckett shooting over from the left and it was against the run of play that Hawley made it 4-2 in the 63rd minute, his low shot taking a slight deflection and flying past Booth into the bottom corner.
Karl Marginson’s side continued to push forward but their appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears when Harry Norris appeared to be clipped from behind.
Despite dominating possession in the closing minutes Trafford were unable to break down the well drilled Avro defence and so fell to a disappointing defeat that leaves them hovering just outside the relegation zone, two points above Hednesford Town and 15 points ahead of already doomed 1874 Northwich.
