Trafford end their season with single goal defeat

Trafford’s topsy-turvy season came to an end on Saturday when they fell to a single goal defeat at the hands of promotion chasing Prescot Cables.
Defences were on top in the opening stages although Cables striker Charlie Glennon glanced a header over in the 17th minute and three minutes later Sean Higgins rounded off a great move by the hosts with a 15 yard volley straight at Mitchell Allen.
A left wing corner by Rob Worrall was volleyed over at the back post by Trafford skipper Harry Norris and Trafford thought they had taken the lead in the 37th minute when Niall Cummins shot was touched onto the post by Allen and Jerome Wright followed up to rifle the ball into the roof of the net. However, the assistant referee ruled that Wright was marginally offside.
Prescot appeared to move into a higher gear in the second half and dominated for long spells.
Jack Goodwin broke clear in the 47th minute but his attempted lob was deflected wide by Sam Booth and then a left wing corner was headed wide of the back post by skipper Liam Hollett.
Home midfielder Chris Rowney cleared a Kyle Sambor header off the line as the visitors poured forward and Prescot squandered another great chance in the 65th minute when James Foley volleyed against the left hand upright from just 10 yards.
In the 80th minute the visitors had the ball in the back of the net but the goal was disallowed for a foul on Sam Booth by Sambor and three minutes later the deadlock was finally broken when Jack Goodwin struck a low drive from the left, Sam Booth parried at full length and John Murphy followed up to ram the ball into the bottom corner.
Karl Marginson’s side were unable to battle back from that upset and the result meant that Trafford ended the season in a disappointing 17th place. Despite their lowly position, Trafford’s support throughout the season has been magnificent, both home and away, with Saturday’s attendance of 599 testament to that.
However, Marginson is well aware that a rebuilding job is necessary and he will be very busy over the summer months in bringing new faces to the club.
