Trafford continued their remarkable away form with a superb 2-0 victory at Newcastle Town, a Rio Clegg double taking his season’s tally to 16 goals.
The game was far from being a classic with a difficult and bobbly playing surface making creative and constructive football almost impossible.
As a result, goal-scoring opportunities were at a premium, with both defences on top, in a scrappy first half.
A low cross from the left by Town full back Isaac Godwin almost deceived Sam Booth in the 18th minute, the Trafford keeper scrambling across his goal to push the ball to safety.
Booth then fumbled a drive by Ty Webster before pouncing on the loose ball, and in the 39th minute the visitors giant centre back Jordan Fagbola was dispossessed by Findlay Starky-Jones who fortunately chipped the ball wide with Booth stranded.
In the 42nd minute Trafford were gifted the lead when a weak back pass was seized upon by Rio Clegg who advanced to coolly lob the ball past Joe Slinn.
Buoyed by this goal, Trafford made a bright start to the second half with Rio Clegg crashing a thunderous drive from the right that was pushed behind by Slinn.
Gradually the hosts got on top and in the 56th minute a header by skipper Tommy Van Der Laan from a left wing corner was comfortably held by Sam Booth.
Nathan Barry poked his shot wide at the near post as Town pushed forward whilst at the other end a Hilal Khan corner was glanced wide by Toba Obityayo.
Sam Booth pushed another Der Laan header past the upright before Trafford made the points safe in the 87th minute with their second goal.
Recent signing Kevin Spinelli held the ball up brilliantly and fed the marauding Rio Clegg on the right hand side of the Town penalty area. Clegg was unceremoniously dumped to the ground by Town defender Godwin and dusted himself down to coolly dispatch the resultant spot-kick past Slinn and into the bottom right hand corner.
Neither goalkeeper was troubled in the remaining minutes, and so Trafford recorded their ninth victory on the road, having collected 31points in away games out of an overall total of 51.
Karl Marginson’s side remain in 7th place in the NPL West Division, just two points outside the play-off positions, and they will be hoping to build on this on Saturday when they entertain Wythenshawe Town at the Away Day Care Shawe View Stadium, kick off 3pm - once again the Club will be hosting a "KIDS GO FREE" day - all under 14's can gain entry to the ground free, as long as they are with an accompanying adult.
