Honours even in a scrappy game

A game full of grit, determination and honest endeavour, but sadly lacking in quality, ended with honours even in this New Years’ Day clash at Surrey Street.
A poor playing surface made creative football virtually impossible and as a result both teams relied almost exclusively on playing long balls forward.
Glossop dominated the opening stages and in the 9th minute, following a right wing corner, the visitors were able to scramble the ball clear.
Mike Burke and Matty Barlow just failed to connect with crosses as Trafford looked dangerous on the break but their injury jinx struck again in the 28th minute when right back Sean Higgins was forced to leave the field with an injury and was replaced by Jack Sloan.
Just a minute later Trafford created the best chance of the game when Ollie Ford cut in from the right but fired wide of the near post.
In the 38th minute the hosts took the lead with a quite magnificent goal, ex-Trafford midfielder Rory Fallon striking a wonderful side-footed shot from 25 yards past Matty Cooper.
Five minutes into the second half Keaton Mulvey almost made it two when he cut inside Keil O’Brien but thankfully shot across the face of the goal.
Trafford manager Danny Caldecott introduced substitute Tunde Otulana in place of Matty Barlow and this appeared to add more spark to the visitors attack.
Vehement appeals for a penalty after Glossop centre back Sam Barratt appeared to handle fell on deaf ears and then home goalkeeper Harry Allen produced a superb close range save to thwart Otulana.
Otulana then completely miskicked from 15 yards after being freed by substitute Connor Hughes but Trafford were finally rewarded for their endeavour when Astley Mulholland floated the ball into the penalty area, Keil O’Brien headed across the face of goal and Hughes gleefully rammed his volley into the roof of the net.
Both teams pushed forward in search of the winner but defences were now on top and the final whistle signalled what was perhaps a fair result.
On Saturday Trafford entertain league leaders Marine at the Home Estates Shawe View Stadium, kick off 3 p.m.
Another huge crowd is expected for what may well be a record attendance at Shawe View and so spectators are advised to arrive at the ground early to avoid the queues. Alternatively, tickets may be pre-booked using the Shocal app.
