Brave Trafford undone by bad luck, poor officiating and top class opposition

Trafford produced a brave and skilful performance but a mixture of bad luck, poor officiating and top class opposition meant that they left Gorsey Lane on the back of a 4-1 defeat.
The first chance of the game fell to the visitors in the 6th minute when Mike Burke broke free down the left but Rylands keeper Graeme McCall pushed his shot past the near post.
Andy Scarisbrick blasted high and wide as the hosts settled and they took the lead in the 13th minute when Charlie Doyle rounded off a slick four man move with a superb curling drive that left Jonny MIlwaine rooted to his line.
Trafford battled back and in the 22nd minute Alfie Belcher fed Matty Morgan whose close range shot was blocked by McCall and from the resulting corner Adam Rooney volleyed wide from six yards.
In the 31st minute Rylands tricky winger Kane Drummond broke down the right and crossed for Scarisbrick to tap home from two yards and double the hosts lead.
Belcher then saw his low drive spilled by McCall and as Mike Burke attempted to pounce on the rebound he appeared to be impeded by Adam Buxton but referee Croft ignored Trafford’s vehement appeals for a penalty.
Trafford were now facing an uphill task but they continued to play with great spirit and four minutes into the second half they were thrown a lifeline when Alfie Belcher clipped a pass over the Rylands defence and Mike Burke struck a spectacular volley into the top corner from 15 yards.
The large and vociferous band of Trafford supporters sensed an upset but their hopes were extinguished in the 76th minute when Kane Drummond broke clear in a seemingly offside position, Jonny McIlwaine saved bravely at his feet but the ball fell kindly to David Webb who fired home from six yards.
Six minutes later the scoring was completed when Rylands broke down the right, switched the ball inside to Andy Scarisbrick and he cracked a fine shot past McIlwaine and inside the left hand upright.
Trafford full back Sean Higgins then suffered a nasty looking head injury and was taken off so Danny Caldecott’s finished the game with ten men as all three substitutes had been used.
The final whistle signalled a disappointing result for the visitors although it rather flattered a Rylands side who now move to the top of the Northern Premier League Division One West table.
On Saturday Trafford entertain Mossley at the Home Estates Shawe View Stadium, kick off 3 p.m.
